Fast guy, or idiot?

Jack Lanier ends his column on cornering technique with "Either you're a fast guy or you're an idiot. There's no middle ground." That's an accurate statement when it comes to how much speed to carry into a corner, and most of us amateurs fall into the second group. The guys who late-brake and enter a corner as fast as possible often end up slower overall. Why? They spend so much time trying to conquer the corner that they can't get back on the throttle early enough, while fast lap times come from entering the corner under control and going WOT ASAP. The author learned this by recording his driving with a Racelogic data-acquisition system and comparing it to a faster driver. Since most of us don't have these type of resources, I'd recommend heading out to your local autocross event and asking an experienced driver to ride along with you for a few runs.
