GM's OnStar to Notify Recalls
Beginning next month, if you own a GM vehicle and subscribe to OnStar, you are in luck — in
the event of a recall, you will not only get the standard notice in your mailbox, you will also be alerted when you
press that blue button you paid $700 extra for. This sure sounds like a good idea, but we are not sure how we feel
about it: on one hand, we applaud GM's effort to keep the consumers informed on potentially dangerous
product-related issue; on the other, we worry about a car company that has such a poor quality track record (in 2004
alone, GM recalled more than 10 million cars) that it needs to take steps to make sure all the recall repairs are being
completed before class-action lawsuits start popping up. And what if the OnStar button is actually the component
that's being recalled? Then what?
