Diesels for the GMT900 SUVs?
GM's line executive for full-size trucks is stating that an introduction of diesel engines to the company's new SUVs is a "viable option" sometime during the platform's life. That's not necessarily encouraging, but it's not a "no", either. The magnificent Duramax is available in pickup trucks and now in the company's vans, but for whatever reason not even the 3/4-ton Suburban and Yukon XL get any compression-ignition love. Diesels are nothing new to GM SUVs, having been an option from the introduction of the 6.2 L Detroit Diesel in 1982 up until the 2000 changeover to the GMT800 platform. Emissions are the blanket answer thrown at any question about diesel powerplant availability, but that would seem to be a non-issue for at least the 3/4-ton models.
