American muscle cars are winning races again
Not since the Pony Car Wars of the early '70s have we seen so many factory-supported American cars on U.S. road courses. The Grand American Road Racing Series, with its stock-oriented rules for Grand Am Cup, and racer-friendly GT class rules in Rolex Championship competition, has drawn Ford and GM back to the track to compete with their German and Japanese market rivals.
More after the jump.
This year, the Grand Am Cup GS class was dominated by Ford Mustangs in their first season of competition. At the season-ending race at VIR this past weekend, Ford clinched the driver?s, team and manufacturer?s championships with the reborn pony car. (More on the Mustang sweep here.)
In Rolex competition, Pontiac?s new GTO.R has taken it to the BMW?s and Porsches with some success, and GTO drivers
are leading the championship with one race to go.
Factory support has made all this happen, with Multimatic?s GS Mustangs available as nearly turnkey racecars from
Ford?s performance catalog. In GT, GM stalwarts Pratt and Miller (the engineering shop behind the Corvette C5Rs and
C6Rs) have worked their magic on the GTO.R.
From a race fan?s point of view, it?s all good!
[Thanks, Mike!]
