Hyundai pushs more four-banger Sonatas
While many automakers continue to move away from four-cylinder engines to V6s to meet customer's increasing demands for power, Hyundai intends to address concerns about fuel economy by increasing the percentage of new Sonatas equipped with the smaller engine. The split is current 60/40 in favor of the V6, but near-term plans call for at least 50% of Sonatas to be built with the I4 engine. Other carmakers also seem to be finding inline-four religion, with GM finally offering its Ecotec in the G6 and Ford proudly promoting the Duratec available in its new Fusion. The good news is that modern four-cylinders offer very acceptable performance; the bad news is that with the closing of the power gap between I4s and V6s, the mileage gap seems to be closing as well.
