African GP for 2009?
Bernie Ecclestone's plan for Formula 1 world domination just keeps rolling on. The latest domino to fall is Africa,
which looks set to hold a Grand Prix in 2009 in Cape Town, South Africa.
The SA GP Bid Company claims to have 90 percent of the funding in place to build the new Hermann Tilke-designed track
shown in the picture at right. The company plans to fund the track construction - currently estimated at around $80
million - entirely with private sector funds.
In addition to F1, the track would host MotoGP, Superbike and sports car races. F1 previously raced in South Africa at
the Kyalami circuit, but it was dropped from the calendar when it failed to meet modern safety standards.
