Audi to eliminate port fuel injection (eventually)
Audi has announced that they will be using their Fuel Straight
Injection (FSI) direct gasoline injection system on all future engines. Technology development related to indirect
(port) fuel injection has been suspended. Don't expect a big change in Audi's lineup overnight, but they claim that the
phase-out will happen in less than 10 years. The first Audi engine with FSI to hit US shores is the turbocharged 2.0L
inline-4 offered in the new A3, which exploits the improved detonation resistance of direct injection to combine a
10.5:1 compression ratio with a light amount of boost. While it's unlikely that direct injection will yield the same
magnitude of improvement that we saw by replacing carbs with EFI, Audi may very well gain enough marketing advantage to
offset the 5% increase in unit cost.
EDIT: Oops. As several readers pointed out, the 3.2 L V6 (with an astonishingly high 12.5:1 compression ratio) was the first FSI engine offered here by Audi. As punishment, I've been sentenced to scraping tire rubber from the rear wheelwells of the GTO that Walt reviewed.
