Saab mulls taking on the BMW 1-seriesIf they called it a 9-1, would BMW sue? Whatever it ends up being called, Saab is thinking about producing a vehicle that would go head-to-head with the Audi A-3 and the BMW 1-series, positioned below the Saab 9-3.

In typical pipeline fashion, it's in the early stages and won't see the finish line for a good three years, but the seeds have been planted, according to a report in Automotive News Europe.

While it's not likely that the vehicle will see the inside of an American showroom, anything can happen in three years -- particularly if BMW still hasn't stepped into that sandbox by 2009.
