Second shift spared for GM SUV plant
GM planned on eliminating the second shift at their Okalahoma City plant that builds the extended wheelbase versions of GMT-360 trucks (Trailblazer, Envoy, Ascenders). The plant took a hit when the Envoy XUV, which was based on the extended platform, was canceled earlier this year due to low sales. A memo said that the postponement of the June 27 cut was based on an updated report on the SUV market demand. When the trucks are replaced in 2008, word is that all models will have seven passenger capabilities that leave the fate of the OK plant in question. The second shift cancellation would have affected about 830 jobs.
