Toyota develops laser warning systemFrom our buds over at Engadget:
Perhaps in a move to out-do Honda's IR-based warning sytem, today Toyota announced in Japan that they were introducing a laser-based warning system that shoots a green laser beam at the road ahead to warn drivers of pedestrians or other obstacles.  An interrupted laser beam triggers a slew of warning sounds in the cockpit, gently requesting that the driver honor us with either a brisk turn or a slam on the breaks lest an innocent puppy get smushed under a Camry.

Autoblog says: This is one of those smart devices that may work. As long as the laser isn't actually visible this would solve all those accidents caused by people not paying attention when driving. Heck, I could start reading while I drive now, as long as something warned me about hitting the guy in front of me.
