Toyota launches Belta subcompact in Japan
Toyota announced today the launch of a new subcompact sedan for the home market named Belta, which the company says
means "beauty" or "beautiful person" in Italian. Isn't that "bella"? Either way, the Belta is powered by either a 1.0L
or 1.3L engine and will come in either two- or four-wheel drive models. Green Car Congress is reporting that the 1.0L
is capable of delivering 51 mpg (US), while the 1.3L is able to eek out 46 mpg (US). Both powerplants utilize Toyota's
Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) system, as well as the company's Continuously Variable
Transmission-intelligent (CVT-i) system. Sales are expected to reach 3,000 units/month in the home market and the Belta
is being considered for export. The vehicle's face is definitely wearing the corporate grin that we've also seen on the
next Toyota Camry.
