Toyota officially withdraws from Indy Racing League
Surprising absolutely no one, Toyota finally made it official Friday - it will not race in the IRL 2006 season, a
year earlier than its planned withdrawal in 2007.
Honda will now power all IRL competitors for 2006 and beyond.
Toyota last won the IndyCar championship in 2003, with Scott Dixon and Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, but has been unable
to match rival Honda since then. Rather than invest further in a lonely Honda-Toyota grudge match in the IRL, Toyota
opted to focus its circle-track racing efforts on more popular NASCAR series. Currently successfully competing in the
Craftsman Truck series, Toyota is slated to make the leap to Nextel Cup competition in 2007.
