Toyota to build Scion cars in the US?
One effect of the Toyota/Subaru tie-up may already be unfolding, as Toyota is discussing using Subaru's excess US production capacity to build its Scion vehicles in the states. Toyota's Canadian operations (set to produce the next RAV4) were examined, but the use of the Indiana Subaru plant was said to produce the same effect with less investment. If such a move goes forward, it would be a strong counterargument to the conventional wisdom that says an economy car can't be profitably built in the US. It's likely also part of Toyota's recent efforts to avoid governmental protectism for the Big 3, as the Scion in particular has been the target of some mumbled allegations of "dumping".
