Toyota to drop Corolla name in UK
The Toyota Corolla, the Japanese automaker's success story of a car with over 30 million units sold worldwide since its introduction in 1966, may be the Corolla no more. UK site Auto Express News reports that the Corolla's replacement will represent such a separation from the Corolla idea that it will merit its own name, at least in the United Kingdom, where Corolla sales lag behind more popular vehicles such as the Ford Focus. Ford, coincidentally, did something similar when it canned the Escort in favor of the Focus -- to positive results.
The currently un-named small car for the UK will go on sale early next year with just three- and five-door models. The four-door will still be called the Corolla and go on sale in markets outside of the UK.
