U.S. to get Smart
ZAP, a California company planning on importing the uniqie Smart
car to the United States, has gotten the final clearance from the U.S. government and the E.P.A. to import the small
60-mpg cars. Their marketing strategy however seems to be anything but unique, actually taking a page out of MINIUSA's
advertising book by placing their small cars atop much larger vehicles, such as the Hummer. Since May of this year,
when ZAP signed an agreement to distribute 15,000 cars in the United States, some 6,000 orders have been placed for
Smart cars. However, ZAP is still looking to setup dealers around the country, or to partner with a national chain. So
don't expect to see Smart cars by you anytime soon, unless of course it is riding around atop a Hummer.
