Volvo considering compact SUV?

is reporting on a rumored small SUV from Volvo, pitched to compete with the BMW X3, Toyota's RAV4 and fellow Ford satellite Land Rover's Freelander. With a new RAV4 in the pipeline, as well as the Mitsubishi Outlander, the Mercedes X-class, and a planned VW Golf-based SUV, everyone who isn't in the market segment wants to be, possibly including Volvo (XC50?) and Audi (Q5?).
The report cites insiders as suggesting that a Volvo concept car could appear in 2006, perhaps based on the next-gen
Land Rover Freelander platform (shown at right). The Freelander is Great Britain's top-selling 4x4, with 2006 models
starting around $30,000.
